How Negative Attention Can Influence Drug Use
Portland children require care and attention to develop properly. Healthy emotional and psychological functioning depends on a sense of security and significance. Children and teens experience these feelings in the following ways:
- Parental love and affection
- Having their basic needs met consistently
- Caring, reasonable and consistent discipline
- Verbal and physical signals of support and encouragement
- Quality time
Even when Portland teens push against these needs and argue for more autonomy, their emotional core rests in the fact that they are known and loved.
Contemporary culture tends to reduce the time young people spend with their parents. The prevalence of divorce challenges their sense of familial security. Negative images in the entertainment often glorify rebellion and demonize authority. It is easy for young Portland residents to fall under the influence of negative social elements which can lead to risky behaviors. Young people who are not given healthy, structured attention are at much higher risk for drug and alcohol abuse and criminal activity, as they may associate negative attention with the only interaction they get with authority figures.
The Risks of Negative Attention Seeking
Young people will find the attention they require one way or another. If they are not afforded access to healthy, disciplined attention they will search until they find a substitute. Not all examples of negative attention seeking seem to be negative on the surface. Unhealthy attention-seeking behavior include the following examples:
- Finding acceptance among other troubled youths, including criminals, drug users or gang members
- Becoming involved in obsessive, unhealthy romantic relationships
- Striving to excel at sports or academics to win the respect and acceptance of others
- Finding virtual community and acceptance through internet resources, video games or other technological means
- Obsessive use of pornography and risky sexual behavior
- Eating disorders such as anorexia or bulimia
When noticed and addressed early, this kind of behavior can be corrected. Specialized teen and family counseling can help Portlanders learn new, healthy ways of expressing their needs and feelings, and showing support, respect and love to one another. However, sometimes more serious intervention, therapy and rehab will be needed.
How Seeking Negative Attention Affects Addiction
Drug abuse often starts as an unconscious means of self-medicating loneliness, neglect, abuse or depression. The high that is experienced while using drugs blocks psychological distress. The brain will crave that relief in ways that are much more powerful than rational thought. Once a psychological addiction is established it often requires detox and rehab for people to recover. Parents, siblings and extended family become a part of their loved one’s recovery process through specialized counseling and education. They often need to establish and reinforce the healthy boundaries that reassure people that they are loved.
